Surgical Technologist

Job Summary

The Surgical Technologist works within the operating room and procedure rooms under the supervision and delegatory authority of the physician and Registered Nurse. Facilitates the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Prepares instruments and supplies utilizing the principles of a sepsis and sterile technique. Combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation and tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Essential Duties

  • Provides care for the optimal patient experience by adhering to the organizations mission, vision, and foundations.
  • Utilizes physician preference cards to obtain all necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Prepares the operating room with sterile back table and mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment and medications/solutions with verification of sterility.
  • Dons OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE) utilizing sterile technique.
  • Assists team member and physicians with gowning and gloving.
  • Assists with positioning the patient using appropriate equipment and anatomical principles to avoid patient injury.
  • Assists operating team in performance of pre-operative skin preparation and skin scrub.
  • Assists with draping the patient and establishing a sterile field.
  • Anticipates the needs of the physician by passing instruments and supplies to the physician during the procedure.
  • Measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigations solution as directed by the physician utilized during the procedure.
  • Assist with sponge, suction or application of electrocautery as directed by the physician.
  • Coordinates the camera or changes out instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed by physician.
  • Assists in wound exposure as needed and maintains sterile technique.
  • Follows cleaning guidelines of contaminates in the operating room.
  • Performs surgical counts with circulating RN according to policy and procedure.
  • Prepares and passes of specimens as appropriate. Assists RN with specimen identification.
  • Prepares suture and dressing for use by physician.
  • Assists with instrumentation sterilization process; tray preparation; and maintenance and quality assurance of instrument washer and sterilizer.
  • Assists with terminal cleaning, room turnover including supply restocking.
  • Provides supportive care during the pre-operative phase.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in meeting the needs of the Surgery Center.
  • Maintains all required licenses and certifications.
  • Assists visitors, staff and physicians utilizing good guest relations.
  • Responds in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patient and physician.
  • Attends staff meetings and educational opportunities.
  • Prioritizes job responsibilities to facilitate optimum patient care and utilization of resources.
  • May assist and perform other duties or special projects as assigned by management.

Certifications & Licensure

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred

Education & Experience

  • Graduate of accredited Surgical Technology training program
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience as a technician
  • Experience in ambulatory surgery setting preferred
